For context, Hunting® pioneered the 1-piece forged drill pipe for use in the HDD industry in 1993. As the leading manufacturer of HDD drill pipe, this premium pipe is manufactured from a special alloy material that, when heat treated, conforms to grade S-135. Beginning with a seamless tube, this pipe is internally & externally upset for optimal strength, heat-treated, straightened, and then inspected for conformity to S-135 standards. Additionally, the pin and box connections are precision machined onto the heat-treated to-grade blanks.

Birth of the Firestick

The original connection, which was developed by Hunting, is also present in the drill pipe. Vermeer now markets it under its registered Firestick trademark as Firestick® I drill pipe. This pipe features a double shoulder for increased torque handling capabilities and a steep taper for deep stabbing. When combined with a fast pitch thread, it delivers quick makeups and breakouts.

In 1999 Hunting® designed a new connection which has also been adopted by Vermeer for its drill pipes. Vermeer has marketed these connections under its registered Firestick trademark as Firestick® II drill pipes. This connection contains the same features as the Firestick® I with the addition of a patented shoulder design that resists flaring from high torque and bending stresses.
